We were recently subjected to a long electioneering period where our screens were always painted with packed political rallies, politicians hurling insults against each other, Kenyans scrambling for political goodies and a plethora of apocryphal and false promises from our politicians. We got to see that side of our politicians which comes out vividly seasonally, something like after every 5 years…haha.
Most politicians showed us that they can be abundantly reckless in a bid to impress their various “bosses” as they were out here hunting for the votes. Of course, the majority of the politicians are usually very egoistic, generally arrogant and reckless all in the same breath because they have the power and authority. But on our list today, we have documented those politicians whose extreme recklessness and ego has either landed them in jail, made them even more famous or even made them be loved and hated in equal measure.
The former SONU chairman and incumbent Starehe Mp Babu Owino is reckless from the word to go. He started way back on campus but it has proven to work for him politically. Babu has slept behind bars severally because of his recklessness, he has abused the president severally, dared him, his deputy and many other elected members of the ruling party and this has put alway at loggerheads with the state. Babu jumped straight from campus politics to active national politics and caused ripples already even during their swearing-in by refusing to recognize Uhuru as the president. He has been over and over arrested over hate remarks.
Maybe one of the most vocal and loyal supporters of Uhuru Kenyatta. Moses Kuria, Gatundu South Mp has landed himself in trouble many times because of his remarks, be it tribal or political. His radical remarks against the opposition always make headlines which makes him a frequent visitor in Kenyan courts to answer to charges like defamation, hate speech, and even incitement. He was recently ordered by the court to pay Martha Karua Ksh 6.5 million for defamation.
3. Aden Duale
A top daily in Kenya once describes him as one of the Most reckless politicians whose outbursts derailed debates on contentious issues-from election laws to public probity. He has a good mastery of the law of the land but very poor at seeing it served. He even had a hard time some months ago trying to convince the DCI that the voice in audio inciting youths to evict Kambas from Garissa wasn’t his. He has always been at loggerheads with the opposition both in parliament and outside and his derogatory remarks are usually exasperating to the supporters of the opposition.
Junet is hilarious, crafty and reckless. The Suna west lawmaker has been locked up severally in police cells because of his hard stance remarks against the government of the day. He has been arraigned in court to answer hate speech, incitement and contempt charges to name just but a few. He is one of the few lawmakers who brings in humor in his many public addresses, be it a rally or a media briefing even in the gravest of the moment.
You couldn’t miss seeing such a politician in this “honorable” list, won’t you? Kipchumba is hated and loved in equal measure. With a decorated political history, having had trounced heavyweights like the late Nicholas Biwott and David Kimaiyo in the Elgeyo Marakwet senatorial seat, Kipchumba commands great influence and ego. His recklessness in speech has almost put him in a physical war with the opposition and many in opposition hate him bigtime. He is an ardent supporter of Ruto and the incumbent government.
Miguna is an author, columnist, a power panelist a barrister and solicitor in Canada, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya to name just but a few…oh and he is also a politician too, a very radical one. Miguna lost the Gubernatorial race for Nairobi but truth said he made the debates so worth watching. Personally, he is the main reason I watch some of this political debates when he is a panelist because as much as he is completely reckless, he also has mastered the art of deconstructing somebody with solid facts and leaves you “for the dead”. Well, at least he impresses us but he finally gets dealt with alone, especially by the government. Miguna’s recklessness made him fall out with Mr. Larry Madowo on his SideBar show and he got dismissed on air, something he unapologetically welcomed and promised never to show up again. The self-declared NRM general dared the government to come get him after swearing in Rt.Hon Raila and the government sure did. His recklessness started way back when he was a student leader in UON and he started political activism against one man who couldn’t be opposed, retired president Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.
The incumbent Kiambu governor has been frequently charged alongside Moses Kuria for hate speech charges, incitement, and contempt of court. His hasn’t been a smooth ride but he has overcome many of his charges tough many others are still pending in court.
This Dagoretti North Member of Parliament does not escape the public eye in such lists. Mr. Arati who is a staunch supporter of NASA and its leader Raila Odinga. Late last years, he was being hunted down by the police for allegedly fostering chaos in Kawangware, he also got his firearm license revoked recently. His utterances haven’t gone well with the government in the recent past.
Mbita MP is one courageous and one of the most vocal female legislators in the house, but reckless too. This fiery Mbita lawmaker sometimes back claimed to have been undressed on the floor of the house. She has even abused the president and kept off parliament for sometime in fear of arrest and prosecution.
10. Alfred Keter
Alfred Keter fell out with his party days to elections and he was branded a rebel. He showed the president how trust and loyalty quickly fade as enmity quickly crept in. If you can remember, this Nandi Hills MP was caught on tape threatening officers at a Gilgil weighbridge. In what can only be described as reminiscent of the dark KANU days when operatives would use the name of the President and State House for their own gain, Alfred Keter was seen in this video threatening officers at the Weigh Bridge. Apparently, he was drunk and was using vulgar language against police officers. Keter has also been in court to answer to contempt of court, voter bribery, voter intimidation and incitement charges.
