This article focuses on Afya Sacco membership eligibility and requirements. Afya Sacco is a democratic, member-driven and self-help financial institution that was registered on 8th May 1971.
It is the 5th largest sacco in Kenya with an asset base of more than 20.94 billion. Currently, it has over 38,000 members.
Afya Sacco Membership Eligibility
The following persons qualify to enroll for membership;
- Employees of the Ministry of Health, other government ministries and parastatals.
- Employees of Afya Co-operative Saving and Credit Society and its subsidiaries.
- Staff of Nurses and Midwives Council of Kenya.
- All quasi government institutions under the Ministry of Health viz KEMRI, KETRI, Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenya Medical Training College.
- Workers of health related organisations registered in Kenya.
- Past members who resigned but own shares in Afya Investments Co-operative Society Limited.
- Retired members are allowed to retain their membership so long as they continue contributing minimum monthly shares of Kshs 3,000.
How to Become a Member of Afya Sacco
1. Complete the prescribed application for membership form and attach a photostat copy of the latest payslip, 2 passport size photographs and photostat copy of National ID
2. Employees of parastatals and health related organisations will in addition to (a) above obtain a commitment letter from employer stating their willingness to deduct from salary and remit shares to the society on behalf of the applicant.
3. Payment of not less than Kshs 500 shares contribution until you reach a total of Kshs 20,000, Kshs 5,000 monthly deposits, Kshs 1,000 membership fees (one-off) and another Kshs 300 for Afya Benevolent Fund.
4. Dully completed membership forms will be forwarded to the nearest branch off for recommendation and onward transmission to the headquarters.
5. Members are also at liberty to withdraw from the society as and when they wish to. The withdrawal can be due to death, willful resignation or retirement.
