2. NCBA Insurance – Critical illness cover
NCBA offers a critical illness cover for life-threatening illnesses like heart attack, cancer, stroke, open heart surgery, aortic surgery, major organ transplant –of the heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, bone marrow, accidental brain damage, kidney failure, paralysis, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, dementia (including Alzheimer’s Disease), Parkinsonism and connective tissue disease: rheumatoid arthritis, coma, muscular dystrophy.
The minimum premium cost is ksh.1000 per month and one can cover their loved ones who have an insurable interest e.g spouse/child. Upon diagnosis of a life-threatening illness (not maturity), you are paid an upfront lump sum amount from 1 million to 15 million depending on the sum assured you bought.

3. AIG Insurance – Critical Illness Insurance
AIG Insurance provides diagnosis benefits for a wide range of life-threatening illnesses if diagnosed during the period of insurance. Some covered illnesses include cancer, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, paralysis, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, and even major organ transplants.

4. ICEA LION – Cancer Insurance
ICEA Lion’s Cancer insurance plan provides financial assistance in the event that the cover holder is diagnosed with cancer. The payout can be used for the actual cancer treatment if the medical cover is insufficient or to finance other obligations that the cover holder cant meet due to incapacitation from cancer.
The insurance cost depends on one’s age, gender, and whether or not you smoke. One can pay as low as Ksh200 per month for a cover of Ksh1 million or pay more premium to access a cover of up to ksh 15 million. If you do not suffer from invasive cancer or a benign brain tumor, you can get all your premium refunded to you.
ICEA can offer you a 30 day grace period if you’re unable to pay your premiums on time. Here is a breakdown of how payments are made in the event of invasive cancer.
- On Cancer diagnosis – 10% of the sum insured.
- Chemotherapy – 5% of the sum insured per each treatment course with a maximum of 5 courses within 5 years since diagnosis.
- Surgery – 20% of the sum insured, 1 surgery within 5 years.
- Radiotherapy – 5% of the sum insured per each treatment course with a maximum of 5 courses within 5 years since diagnosis.
- Relapse – 10% of the insured sum between 5-10 years since diagnosis.
- Recovery – 10% of the sum insured after 10 years since diagnosis.
- Palliative care – The remaining part of up to 100% of the insured sum.

- Diagnosis of a benign brain tumor – 10% of the insured sum
- Surgery of a benign brain tumor- 40% of the insured sum

5. Prudential Life – PRUCritical Care
PRU Critical Care provides, for a specified period of time, a lump-sum payout in the event that the covered person or spouse has been diagnosed with a critical illness. First-time diagnosis of such illnesses attracts a lump-sum amount ranging from Ksh 1million to Ksh 15million; varies with the amount of premium paid. One is eligible for this cover if they are above 18years to a maximum of 65 years.
