This article will list the functions of the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE). It is a semi-autonomous state agency under the Ministry Of Education.
Established on February 14, 1986, KISE’s mandate is to identify students with special needs, train teachers to support those students and monitor, evaluate, and report on issues related to special needs in the country.
Functions Of Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)
1. The institute conducts teacher training courses for teachers in various fields of education for children with special needs and disabilities.
2. It conducts in-service courses for personnel working in all fields of special needs education.
2. It prepares and conducts correspondence courses for personnel in the field of special education.
3. It prepares and conducts correspondence courses for personnel in the field of special needs education.
4. It operates an educational and psychological assessment centre that trains teachers who work with children with special education needs.
5. The institute runs an orientation and mobility centre for training and demonstration purposes.
6. It operates a model training unit for the integration and inclusion of children with special needs and disabilities into the regular schools
7. It operates a preschool department where training and the stimulation of young children with special needs and disabilities can be carried out for teacher training.
8. It functions as a resource centre for the production and dissemination of information to the general public on disabilities.
9. It runs a documentation and resource centre on special needs and disabilities
10. The institute conducts research in special needs education.
11. It maintains, repairs, designs, produces and assembles materials and equipment for persons with special needs and disabilities.
12. It advises the Government of Kenya on matters related to special needs and disabilities.
