Functions Of The Tea Board Of Kenya

This article focuses on the functions of the Tea Board of Kenya. The Board is a state corporation in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, established by the Tea Act No 23 of 2020 to develop, regulate and promote the tea sub-sector.

The Board is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Agriculture and Livestock Development. The day-to-day operations are directed by the Chief Executive Officer.

Functions Of The Tea Board Of Kenya

1. It guides the development, promotion and regulation of the tea industry in Kenya for the benefit of the tea growers and other stakeholders.

2. It coordinates the activities of individuals and organisations in the tea industry.

3. It facilitates equitable access to the resources and benefits of the tea industry by all interested parties.

4. It makes recommendations on the formulation of policies, plans and strategies for the regulation of the sub-sector.

5. It registers tea factories, tea growers, warehouse operators, tea packers, tea buyers, exporters, importers brokers, management agents, tea auction organisers and green leaf transporters.

6. It licenses tea manufacturers in Kenya.

7. It promotes best practices and standards along the tea value chain in Kenya.

8. It facilitates the marketing and distribution of Kenyan tea.

9. It coordinates the prioritisation of research in the tea sector.

10. It regulates the sale import and export of tea in Kenya.

11. It develops a national tea marketing strategy.

12. It prescribes the maximum period and minimum amount for payment of green leaf.

13. It promotes value addition and the demand and consumption of tea.

14. It identifies market needs and advises on issues related to national and international trade.

15. It monitors and enforces compliance with tea standards in Kenya.

16. It advises on levies, fees, import and export duties and agricultural cess & fees.

17. It undertakes capacity building and technology transforms for the country.
