This article focuses on how to apply for a courier service license in Kenya. The Communications Authority of Kenya is the body that regulates the courier service industry in Kenya. All courier service providers are required to obtain a valid license from the authority before operating.
Requirements for a Courier Service License in Kenya
1. A cover letter addressed to the director of licensing, compliance and standards on the applicant’s letterhead, stating your intentions to apply for a courier service license.
2. Copy of a certificate of incorporation of the business is registered under the Companies Act, Cap 486.
3. CR12 form showing the company’s directors and shareholders, not older than 2 months.
4. Foreign owned companies should ensure a minimum of 30% Kenyan shareholding.
5. Certified copies of National ID or passports for all directors and shareholders.
Ensure that both sides of the ID are copied on the same side of an A4 paper and passport copies include pages showing nationality, date of issue, expiry and photographs.
6. KRA PIN certificate.
7. Valid Tax Compliance certificate from KRA.
8. Business plan, detailing the services, market to be served, proposed network and business expansion plans for at least the first 3 years.
9. Memorandum and Articles of Association, NGO constitution, cooperative society by-laws or partnership deed (depends on the type of entity).
10. Capital Markets Authority certificate, this is if the company is listed in a stock exchange in Kenya.
How to Apply for a Courier Service License in Kenya
1. Download the application form from the Communications Authority of Kenya website, www.ca.go.ke.
2. Complete the form and attach the required documents.
3. All documents must be certified by a commissioner of oaths or a notary public based in Kenya.
4. Pay the non-refundable application fee of Kshs 5,000. Additional license fees and annual license fees include;
- Public postal operator- Kshs 500,000 or 0.4% of annual turnover whichever is higher.
- International operator- Kshs 100,000 or 0.4% of annual turnover whichever is higher.
- National operator- Kshs 30,000 or 0.4% of annual turnover whichever is higher.
5. Submit the application plus the necessary documents at the Communications Authority of Kenya office.
Note:
- If the application is approved, you will be informed in writing or via SMS or phone.
- You will be notified on the amount you are required to pay.
- After paying, you will be issued with a draft license which you must accept before being issued with the official license.
