How To Apply For A Driving Instructor License In Kenya

This is a guide on how to apply for a driving instructor license in Kenya. For one to practise as a driving instructor in Kenya, he/she needs to be licensed by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). The application for licensing can be done online via the NTSA portal.

How to Apply for a Driving Instructor License in Kenya

1. Go to the NTSA website and log in to the self-service portal. If you are a first time visitor, you will have to create an account on TIMS.

2. Click on ‘Driving License’ option on the menu bar.

3. Select ‘Apply for Driving Instructor License’ on the menu.

4. A Driving Instructor License application form will be displayed. Fill all the mandatory details accurately then upload copy of a scanned copy of all supporting documentation (as listed on the site). Confirm the details.

5. Click on ‘Next’ to proceed to the payment page.

6. The license fee and convenience charges will be displayed on the page. The fee is Kshs 1,050.

7. Proceed to make payments by choosing your preferred payment method, either by Mpesa or bank.

8. Complete the payment then proceed to print out the payment invoice.

9. Click on ‘Submit’ for the application to be processed.

10. A notification will be sent via SMS once the driving instructor license is ready for collection.

11. After receiving the notification, visit NTSA offices as instructed, with your National ID and invoice printout. NTSA officials will verify the documents then issue you with the Driving Instructor License.

Required Documents

  • Valid ID card for citizens or passport for foreigners.
  • Valid driving license.
  • Valid certificate of good conduct.
  • Recent clear passport photo.
  • Ordinary level certificate of education.
  • Subject matter and classes will vary depending on your state, but will include both driving course work and classroom work.
  • An abstract of the driving record (this is if from out of province).
  • Medical referral forms completed by a duly qualified medical practitioner.
  • Vision referral form, completed by a duly qualified ophthalmologist or optometrist (if necessary).
  • Operator’s license for inspection.
  • Other documents supporting experience, character or qualifications upon request by the authority.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, applicants should meet the following criteria;

  • An applicant must be 25 years and above.
  • He/she must have undergone training for instructors.
  • Must have experience of 5 years with the class of vehicles that you want to instruct.
  • Applicant must pass a vision test.
  • You will be required to pass a physical and possibly mental health screening before becoming eligible.
  • Hold a current Kenya driver license.
  • Be physically and mentally competent.
  • Have an acceptable driving record.
  • You should not have been convicted of a criminal offence in the last 5 years.
