This is a guide on how to apply for a scrap metal dealership license in Kenya. The Scrap Metal Council is the body with the mandate to develop appropriate measures and mechanisms for regulating the scrap metal industry in Kenya.
It is a state corporation under the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry.
Types of Scrap Metal Dealers License in Kenya
1. Site License
- It is issued by the local authority in whose scrap metal is situated.
- It requires all of the sites where the licensee conducts a scrap metal business within the local authority area to be identified and a site manager named for each location.
2. Collector’s License
- Allows a person to collect scrap metal (both commercial and domestic) in the issuing local authority area.
- It does not permit a person to collect scrap metals from another local authority area. One will need a separate license from each local authority where they wish to collect the metals.
Requirements for Scrap Metal Dealership License in Kenya
- Scrap Metal Dealers Association membership number and certificate.
- Business registration certificate.
- Business permit.
- Plot title or lease agreement.
- Tax compliance certificate.
- Director’s details, i.e KRA PIN and certificate of good conduct.
- License fee deposit slip.
Charges
1. Dealer: Kshs 250,000.
2. Agents: Kshs 250,000.
3. Export: Kshs 250,000.
4. Miller: Kshs 250,000.
5. Importer: Kshs 250,000.
How to Apply for a Scrap Metal Dealership License in Kenya
1. Go to the Scrap Metal Council website, https://www.scrapmetalcouncil.go.ke/licensing-process.
2. Create an account and log in.
3. Add details about the company and directors.
4. Submit an application or several applications.
5. Application is subjected to secretariat review.
6. The application is subjected to council review.
7. The council’s decision is communicated to the applicant.
8. The applicant can lodge an appeal to the cabinet secretary for industrialization in case he/she is not in agreement with the council’s decision.
