This is a guide on how to apply for an electricity connection in Kenya. Kenya Power and Lighting Company is the body mandated to plan for sufficient electricity generation and transmission capacity to meet demand, build and maintain the power distribution and transmission network and retail electricity to its customers.
Currently, Kenya Power has a self-service portal where customers can conveniently apply for electricity connections and access other services.
Requirements for Electricity Connection in Kenya
This applies to all premises where there is no supply i.e, electricity supply lines have not been installed. The requirements include;
- A soft copy of National ID or Passport for non-Kenyans (PDF, MS Word).
- A soft copy of route sketch leading to premises where supply is required.
- Copy of the PIN certificate.
- Wiring certificates.
- Supply contract form.
- Consent from the owner of the property.
Requirements for Corporates
- A soft copy of certificate of registration.
- A soft copy of route sketch leading to premises where supply is required.
- Copy of the PIN certificate.
- A scaled site plan for industries, housing estates, shopping malls etc.
- Supply contract form (signed).
- Wiring certificates (signed).
How to Apply for Electricity Connection in Kenya
Domestic Customers Application Procedure
This applies to Domestic (below 25kVA) and Premium applications (above 25kVA, excluding SMEs with a load between 100kVA to 200kVA). This includes additional load and meter separation applications.
Here is the application procedure;
- Go to the KPLC self-service portal https://selfservice.kplc.co.ke/.
- Click on New Supply Application.
- You will be required to fill a KPLC application form.
- Fill in the required details including your preferred power supply type, either single-phase or third phase).
- Submit the application with the applicable documents or requirements as listed above.
- You will be provided with an application reference number instantly.
- You will receive a quotation based on your specifications in your enquiry.
- You will then obtain necessary consent where applicable to lay electricity supply lines and thereafter undertake construction and metering within set timelines.
KPLC Electricity Installation Costs
The installation costs depend factors such as;
- Distance from existing power connection.
- Connection type; Single Phase or Third Phase.
- Power requirements and number of meters needed.
Installation Costs
(i). Single Phase Installation
Cost: Kshs 34,980.
(ii). Third Phase Installation
Cost: Kshs 49,080.
(iii). Households Near Transformers (Last Mile Connectivity Project)
This is a government programme that is aimed at facilitating the objective of affordably connecting Kenyan households to the national network grid.
Cost: Kshs 15,000.
