How To Convert A Foreign Driving License To Kenyan License

This is a guide on how to convert a foreign driving license to a Kenyan license. Foreign nationals (expats) are required to convert their country of origin driving license to a Kenyan one once they arrive in Kenya.

Foreigners with international driving licenses are allowed to use their licenses in Kenya for a period of 3 months.

How to Convert a Foreign Driving License to a Kenyan License

The following can convert their foreign driving licenses;

  • Alien card holders.
  • Diplomatic card holders.
  • Technical staff- category G (Gratis) class.

(i). Alien Card Holder

Requirements

  • Valid alien ID.
  • Work permit/ dependent pass driving license from a commonwealth country/ international driving permit.
  • Passport copy.
  • Driving license confirmation letter from the embassy or agency responsible for issuance of driving licenses in the country of origin.

Charges

  • Kshs 1,050- conversion fee.
  • Kshs 3,050 smart driving license fee.

(ii). Diplomatic Card Holder

Requirements

  • Diplomatic card.
  • Approved form 7 (MFA) downloaded from NTSA website.
  • Driving license.
  • Passport copy.
  • Passport photo.

Charges

  • Diplomatic priviledge.

(iii). Technical Staff- Category G (Gratis) Class

These are staff who are granted exemptions for services in a country. They provide voluntary services e.g. missionaries and red cross.

Requirements

  • Passport copy.
  • Letter of exemption from immigration.
  • Valid driving license from any country.

Charges

  • Kshs 1,000 (paid through the bank).

Procedure for Converting a Foreign Driving License to Kenyan License

1. Visit the NTSA website www.ntsa.go.ke.

2. Go to online services menu.

3. Click on driver testing and licensing.

4. Sign in using your e-citizen credentials.

5. Click on foreign driving license conversion.

6. Upload all the required documents.

7. Make payment for conversion of license as per the categories; alien card holder, diplomatic card holder or technical staff category.

8. Submit and wait for NTSA approval and an SMS notification.

9. After approval, log in to your e-citizen account to apply for a smart driving license.

10. Make payment for smart driving license then submit.

11. Visit the preferred NTSA centre/ Huduma centre for biometrics enrollment.
