How To Make NHIF Payments Using The New Mpesa Paybill

This is a guide on how to make NHIF payments via the new Mpesa paybill number. The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is the state corporation mandated to provide medical insurance cover to all its members and their declared dependants (spouse and children).

All members are required to make monthly contributions on time to avoid penalties. Recently, NHIF migrated to a new paybill number 222 222. The parastatal issued a notice on the same with effect from 8th December 2023. This is in line with the Kenya Gazette No 16008 of 2022 and the presidential directive designating the use of pay bill number 222 222 as the government’s single payment platform.

Following the president’s directive dated June 30th 2023, all other mobile money payment platforms or paybills have been discontinued.

How to Make NHIF Payments via Mpesa Paybill Number 222 222

1. Go to Mpesa Menu.

2. Click on Lipa na Mpesa then Paybill.

3. Enter 222222 as the Paybill Number.

4. Enter Account Number as follows;

  • For member contribution, NHIFM-ID Number e.g. NHIFM-3354555.
  • For member penalty, NHIFP-ID Number e.g. NHIFP-3354555.
  • Employer contribution, NHIFE-Eslip Number e.g. NHIFE-111222.
  • Employer penalty, NHIFEP-Employer Code.

5. Enter amount, Kshs 500 for every month for self-employed people or Kshs 6,000 for the whole year. (The system can only accept a maximum of Kshs 6,000 at a go).

6. Enter your Mpesa PIN number.

7. You will receive a message from Mpesa confirming that you have successfully made the contribution. The Mpesa message you will receive is proof of payment. NHIF is also able to receive notification immediately payment is done.

If you make an error during the payment process, you can visit the accounts department of any of NHIF branches countrywide with a copy of your National Identification Card and the Mpesa message you received from Safaricom capturing the erroneous transaction. You will be assisted immediately.
