How To Place A Caveat On A Motor Vehicle In Kenya

This is a guide on how to place a caveat on a motor vehicle in Kenya. A caveat is a temporary restriction on a motor vehicle to prevent it from being transferred. It can be placed in all types of vehicles by government investigative agencies or the original owner of the vehicle.

Grounds for Placing a Caveat on a Motor Vehicle

  • Valid court orders, request by the registered owner citing grounds for placing the caveat.
  • Request by relevant government agencies such as DCI, KRA and EACC (this is only placed for a period of 14 days as the investigative agencies seek a court order).
  • The legal spouse of the registered owner of the motor vehicle accompanied by a marriage certificate on the event of cases such as death, insanity or incapacitation.
  • An appointed legal representative like an advocate acting on behalf of the owner.
  • An appointed administrator of property where the registered owner is deceased.
