The National Construction Authority (NCA) is the overall body mandated to regulate, streamline and build capacity in the construction industry for sustainable socio-economic development.
Therefore in order to qualify to be a contractor in Kenya, one needs to apply for a license through the NCA. Below, we look at the steps needed to obtain the license and also renew it.
1. New applicant registration process
1.Visit the website www.nca.go.ke
2. Click on ‘Contractors’ tab, followed by the ‘Register to be a contractor’ tab which will lead you to the registration portal.
3. Click on ‘Register’ and fill in the required fields then log into your account via your national ID/Passport number and Password.
4. Click on the ‘New Application’ tab followed by ‘New Contractor registration’ and submit the required documentation below.
-Academic documents and testimonials for the technically qualified directors,
-Certified copy of business license,
-KRA tax compliance certificate,
-Contractors association membership certificate,
-Certificate of registration/Certification of Incorporation,
-Certificate from ERC if applying as an electrical engineer,
-3 years audited accounts and other relevant financial information,
-Certified copies proving asset ownership and CR12
5. After submission of the renewal application, you will receive an SMS notifying you of an invoice sent to your email address detailing the amount paid as well as the payment mode i.e Mpesa or bank transaction.
In your account, you will be required to key in the bank slip transaction number or the Mpesa transaction number after payment.
2.License renewal process.
1.Visit the website www.nca.go.ke
2. Click on ‘Contractors’ tab, then click on ‘Renewal of practising license’. This will direct you to the registration portal.
3. Click on ‘Register’ and fill in the required input fields. Log into your account with the national ID/Passport number and Password used during the registration process.
4. Click on the ‘Renewals’ tab followed by ‘Renewal of practising license’. Enter your registration number and click on ‘Load Licenses’. Click on ‘Proceed’ and attach the below documents.
-CR12,
-Certificate of registration/Certification of Incorporation
-Certificate from ERC if applying as an electrical engineer
-Certified copy of business license
-Certified copies proving asset ownership
-Contractors association membership certificate
-Academic documents and testimonials for the technically qualified directors
-Tax compliance certificate from KRA and Audited accounts spanning 3 years and other relevant financial information.
5. After submission of the renewal application, you will receive an SMS notifying you of an invoice sent to your email address detailing the amount paid as well as the payment mode i.e Mpesa or bank transaction.
In your account, you will be required to key in the bank slip transaction number or the Mpesa transaction number after payment.
6. The NCA certificate and annual practising license will be auto-generated in your online portal.
