How To Register For SHIF In Kenya

This is a guide on how to register for SHIF in Kenya. The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is an initiative of the Kenyan government that was launched to ensure that Kenyans have access to affordable healthcare services. SHIF is managed by the Social Health Authority (SHA).

SHIF operates on the principle of resource pooling. Membership is open to all Kenyans who are 18 years and above, including students, self employed individuals, retirees and employees.

Eligibility for SHIF

  • You must be a Kenyan citizen or legal resident.
  • Have a valid national identification card or passport.
  • Be 18 years and above.

Categories of SHIF Membership

(i). Principal Member

This is the person who is responsible for the SHIF account, particularly the main income earner.

(ii). Dependents

They are people who are covered under the principal member’s SHIF account. They may include children or spouses.

Required Documents

  • National identification card or passport.
  • Coloured passport size photograph.
  • Any proof of income, for example payslip, bank statement or KRA PIN certificate.

For dependents;

  • You will have to provide proof of relationship if you are registering dependents. This may include a birth certificate or marriage certificate.
  • Identification documents for the dependents.

How To Register For SHIF In Kenya

Registration can be done through the following methods;

  • Self registration by dialling *147# on your mobile phone.
  • Self registration using the Social Health Authority (SHA) portal. www.sha.go.ke.
  • Assisted registration by your Community Health Promoter (CHP).
  • Visit a SHA branch or Huduma Centre near you. USSD code, online portal or in-person at designated registration centers. ussd self registration, web self registration, assisted enrolment.

(i). USSD Code Registration

  • Dial *147# on your mobile phone.
  • Select your ID type to proceed.
  • Enter your ID number.
  • Follow the prompts as required and fill in relevant details.
  • Complete the registration process.
  • Upon successful registration, you will receive a confirmation message.

(ii). Online Registration

  • Visit the Social Health Authority website, www.sha.go.ke.
  • Click on the Register option at the top of the page.
  • Fill in your details on the registration form.
  • Proceed to create your account.
  • An OTP will be sent to your phone.
  • Verify your account using the OTP.
  • Once you have verified your account, you can update your profile or information.
  • You will need to visit an authorised SHA agent for biometric verification and activation.

(iii). In Person Registration

  • Visit any authorised SHA agent or branch with required documents.
  • The authorised agent will assist you with the registration process.
  • Correctly fill in the registration form provided and attach the required documents.
  • Review your details with the agent to ensure that everything is correct.
  • Proceed to submit your application.
  • Biometrics may be captured by the agent.
