Ecological Requirements
- Well-drained sandy- loam soils with a pH of 6.4.
- Warm and humid climate with a temperature range of 15°c- 30°c.
- Annual rainfall of 600- 2000mm.
- Altitude between 0-1500m above sea level.
Land Preparation
Land should be prepared early enough before planting. Proper weeding should be done to avoid competition that may exist for important nutrients. The land should be prepared to a fine tilth.
Planting/ Propagation
Jute mallow is propagated by seeds using a broadcasting method or line sowing method. About 5-8kgs of seeds are enough per ha.
Before planting, the seeds are first mixed with loose soil. This is done to ensure even distribution of seeds. The seeds also have a dormancy period. You need to break the dormancy by simmering them in boiled water for about 10 seconds.
Spacing depends on the variety planted. Tall varieties require a spacing of 10cm by 30cm while broad varieties require a spacing of 15cm by 45cm.
Jute mallow is sensitive to drought. Ensure your land/ ground has enough moisture, especially after sowing. You can practice irrigation.
Pests and Diseases
Jute mallow is susceptible to pests such as spider mites, nematodes, caterpillars and leaf-eating beetles. Diseases include leaf spot and powdery mildew.
The pests can be controlled by practicing crop rotation, spraying pesticides and chemicals such as trichoderma and dynamic. Diseases can be controlled by spraying recommended fungicides.
Harvesting
Maturity period depends on the variety planted. Most varieties are ready for harvesting after 100-150 days.
