This article focuses on the courses offered at KNH School of Nursing and their fee structure. The school was established in 1996 to build capacity for specialised nursing care within Kenyatta National Hospital in units such as critical care, theatre, renal, A&E and newborn units.
The school offers post-basic specialised nursing courses and other short courses for healthcare workers. The courses started in-house in the initial years and were later extended to nurses from other institutions within the country.
All specialised nursing courses offered in the school are approved by the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
KNH School Of Nursing Courses And Fee Structure
1. Higher Diploma Courses in Specialised Nursing
(i). Critical Care Nursing
Fees: Kshs 232,500.
Duration: 1 year.
Intake: September and April.
(ii). Perioperative Nursing
Fees: Kshs 232,500.
Duration: 1 year.
Intake: September.
(iii). Neonatal Nursing
Fees: Kshs 232,500.
Duration: 1 year.
Intake: September.
(iv). Nephrology Nursing
Fees: Kshs 232,500.
Duration: 1 year.
Intake: September and April.
(v). Accident & Emergency Nursing
Fees: Kshs 232,500.
Duration: 1 year.
Intake: September.
(vi). Oncology Nursing
Fees: Kshs 232,500.
Duration: 1 year.

Additional Fees
- Kshs 23,400, payable directly to the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) for indexing, training materials and licensure examination.
- Application fees of Kshs 1,500.
- The fees for foreign nationals is Kshs 300,500. They will also be required to pay 300 USD to NCK and obtain a temporary license before commencement of a course.
Admission Requirements
- KRN/M, KRHCN, BScN.
- 2 years of working experience (3 years for KNH staff).
- KCSE C- or Div III ‘O’ level.
- Professional certificates.
- NCK registration certificate.
- Valid NCK practice license.
- National ID/Passport.
- Each student will be required to have an NHIF card or other health insurance cover.
- Foreign students will be required to submit official translations of their certificates and transcripts if in any other language other than English. Equation of certificate grades by Kenya National Examination Council is also required.
2. Short Courses
(i). Stoma, Wound and Continence Care
The course is open to qualified healthcare workers with a valid license from the relevant regulatory body.
Duration: 3 months.
Fees: Kshs 40,500.
(ii). Theatre Sterile Assistant
Applicants for this course must have ‘O’ level with a minimum grade of D plain or its equivalent.
Duration: 6 months
Fees: Kshs 60,500.
(iii). Basic Life Support (BLS)
The course is open to qualified healthcare workers with valid license from their regulatory bodies.
(iv). Advanced Life Support (ACLS)
The course is open to qualified healthcare workers with valid license from their regulatory bodies.
Application Guidelines for Short Courses
- All applicants should attach legible copies of academic, professional certificates, valid practice license (where applicable) and National ID.
- One should attach an original banking slip and not a photocopy.
- Applicants should provide their email address and mobile phone number for communication.
