This is a list of top 10 best places to visit in Busia County. Busia is a cosmopolitan county that covers an area of 1,628 square kilometres. It is majorly dominated by the Luhya and a substantial population of the Luo and Iteso. The County is headed by Governor Sospeter Ojaamong.

In no particular order, here is a list of 10 best places to visit in Busia County.

1. Kakapel National Monument

It is a rock art site located on a huge rock shelter in Teso North, Busia County. It was officially opened to the public in 2007 after a rehabilitation exercise done by the National Museums of Kenya. It has paintings that illustrate wild animals, rain-making and initiation symbols. It is Kenya’s leading rock art centre.

2. Samia Hills

The magnificent hills are located in Samia sub-county. The hills consist of acid and sub-acid lavas, tuffs and agglomerates, banded quartzite and ironstones. The hills offer amazing opportunities for hiking and bird watching adventures.

3. Kavirondo Series Rocks

The rock series are developed around Busia town, Nambale and Butula. They form a very impressive topographical feature, actually Busia county’s most outstanding topographical feature. The series of rocks include mudstones, granites, dolerites, black felsites, conglomerates and sandstones.

4. Namenya Hills

The spectacular hills are located in Bunyala. The estimated terrain level of the hills is 1134 meters. The hills are surrounded by bushes and indigenous trees which attract over 100 bird species. It is a favourable destination for bird watching and hiking adventures.

5. Yala Swamp

It is a wetland region of over 200 square kilometers in the southwestern edge of Busia County. It serves as a filter for water that flows into Lake Victoria from River Nzoia and Yala. The swamp is a habitat of over 100 species of birds, the endangered sitatunga antelope, endangered fish species such as Oreochromis esculentus and  Oreochromis variabilis.

6. Sio-Siteko Swamp

The wetland traverses Busia and Samia districts in Kenya and Uganda. It is a renowned habitat for over 100 species of birds, including the endangered grey-crowned crane. It is part of the catchment area that covers 35,000 hectares of land featuring River Sio, Malakisi and Malaba.

7. Emakina Hills

The magnificent hills are located in Nambale town. The hills feature bushy vegetation and trees which form an important habitat for different species of birds. You can visit the hills for hiking and birdwatching adventures.

8. Chelelemuk Hill

The hill is situated in Malaba town, a few kilometres from the Kenya-Uganda border. It is also one of the hiking, camping and trail walking destinations in Busia County.

9. Bumbe Beach

Bumbe beach is situated in Samia. It is a perfect place to enjoy swimming, boat rides, water sports and fishing adventures in Lake Victoria.

10. Bukoma Beach

It is a public beach located in Bunyala West ward, Budalangi constituency. It is also an ideal place for swimming adventures, fishing and boat riding activities.
