This is a list of 10 best places to visit in Kisumu County. Kisumu County is headed by Governor Anyang Nyong’o. It is the major tourist destination hub in the Western Tourism Circuit. The county sits on the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake by area and the second largest freshwater lake in the world.

In no particular order, here is a list of ten best amazing places to visit in Kisumu County.

1. Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

It is located approximately 3 kilometres from Kisumu CBD. It is a beautiful sanctuary that hosts impalas, vervet monkeys, the rare sitatunga antelope, buffalos, giraffes, cheetahs, zebras and other primates. It is also home to five campsites with spectacular views of Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest freshwater lake. The sanctuary is a perfect spot for birdwatching, nature walks, boat rides and hiking activities.

2. Kisumu Museum

The museum was opened in 1980. It is located along the Kisumu- Kericho Highway. It features a gallery of cultural materials of people from Western Kenya, in particular, Luo artefacts and other traditional aspects like the Luo homestead. It also features an outdoor snake park, tortoise pens, aquariums and a crocodile site.

3. Hippo Point

It is an open viewing point for hippos on Lake Victoria. There is a camping site and a fishing port on site. It is actually a romantic place where you can enjoy sundowners and family picnics.

4. Kit Mikayi

It is a large rock formation, with about 3 rocks on top. It is situated approximately 29 kilometres from Kisumu Town. It is a sacred site amongst the locals who live there. They conduct prayers and fasting sessions at the facility. It is also a pilgrimage site for the Legio Maria sect. There is a picnic area just below the rocks where you can spend some quality time with your family or friends.

5. Ndere Island National Park

It is an island of serenity and beauty located off the Kisumu- Bondo road. It takes approximately 45 minutes with a speed boat direct from Kisumu.  A wide variety of animals like hippos, baboons, monitor lizards, snakes, Nile crocodiles, impalas, sitatunga antelope, waterbucks, zebras and different species of birds can be found at the park.

6. Lwang’ni Beach

It is a famous fish outlet on the shores of Lake Victoria,  where you can enjoy fresh tilapia at affordable prices. This is one of the places you should never fail to visit when in Kisumu. It is located off Oginga Odinga Road, Kisumu.

7. Dunga Beach

It is a popular beach in Kisumu,  located on the eastern shores of Lake Victoria. It is known for fishing activities and boat riding. There are also numerous restaurants on site where you can enjoy fresh fish at pocket-friendly prices.

8. Dunga Hill Camp

It is a serene site located on the shores of Lake Victoria that offers a perfect environment for camping, picnics, kayaking, boat riding, hippo watching, bird watching and team building activities. Luxury accommodation is offered at the facility in tented camps.

9. Art Markets

You can visit the Maasai market located along the Kisumu- Nairobi road. Numerous art pieces, decorations and paintings can be found here. Another famous art market is the Kisumu Art House where a variety of art collections can be found.

10. Kiboko Bay

It is an amazing tourist destination endowed with natural attractions and charms. You can watch the vibrant birdlife, enjoy boat rides and an excursion to the Dunga fishing village. Accommodation is also offered in luxurious safari tents and deluxe cottages.
