This is a list of top 10 best places to visit in Lamu County. Lamu County has a land surface area of 6, 474.7 square kilometres that include the mainland and over 65 islands that form the Lamu Archipelago. The County is headed by Governor Fahim Yassin Twaha.

In no particular order, here is a list of 10 best places to visit in Lamu County.

1. Kiunga Marine National Reserve

It is a pristine ecosystem that incorporates a chain of approximately 50 offshore islands, sand dune, and coral reefs. The reserve is home to various marine animals such as sea turtles, lobsters, sea urchins, reef fish, sea star and crabs. It is a perfect destination for diving, windsurfing, snorkelling, sunbathing and water skiing.

2. Lamu Museum

It is located in the Lamu Archipelago. It features fascinating collections and exhibits that represent the material culture of the coastal people like the Boni, Pokomo and Orma.

3. Lamu Fort

It is a multi-storied building that was built between 1813 and 1821. It houses an environmental museum and a library. The environmental museum is divided into three sections, the marine section, freshwater and terrestrial section. The fort is majorly used for community events.

4. Dodori National Reserve

It was established in 1976. It covers an approximate area of 877 square kilometres. The reserve is famous for its large topi population, different species of birds, elephants, gazelles, kudus, zebras and green turtles. It is a perfect spot for game viewing and bird watching activities.

5. Takwa Ruins

Takwa ruins are the remains of a thriving Swahili trading town that was abandoned in the 17th century. It is a historical site that features a unique mosque with a large pillar believed to symbolise the burial of a Sheikh. The ruins are located on the southeastern corner of Manda Island. The place is suitable for picnics and overnight camping.

6. The Swahili House Museum

The museum is located in the northern part of Lamu town. It gives visitors a glimpse of the traditional set up of a Swahili home. It features a Swahili home with neat and furnished living areas, bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms.

7. Manda Toto 

It is one of the islands of the Lamu Archipelago.  It is actually the best spot for snorkelling on the Lamu Archipelago.

8. The Fort of Shela

The fort is situated along the sand dunes of Shela beach. The Fort depicts the Omani architectural design. It is an elegant and unique sanctuary that offers a tranquil environment for personalised hospitality. The Fort is a paradise for kite surfers. Yoga and meditation classes are also offered at the Fort.

9. Pate Island

It is the largest island on the Lamu Archipelago. It is a beautiful island that features impressive ruins and old Swahili settlements which depict the early lifestyles and culture of the Swahili people.

10. German Post Office Museum

The museum was opened in 1996. The museum features exhibits and photographs that show the long historical contacts between Germany and Kenya. It depicts the early form of communication which was through postal services.
