This is a list of top 10 best places to visit in Samburu County. Samburu is one of the counties in the former Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It covers an area of  20,182 square kilometres. The County is headed by Governor Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal.

In no particular order, here is a list of 10 best places to visit in Samburu County.

1. Samburu National Reserve

The reserve covers approximately 165 square kilometres. It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River. It features wildlife such as the grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, giraffes, elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, gerenuk and the beisa oryx. The reserve provides a tranquil environment for game viewing, nature walks, bird watching and camping activities.

2. Shaba National Game Reserve

It is a protected game reserve that features beautiful sceneries such as river-side forests, scattered woodlands and grasslands, waterholes, marshes, game species such as Masai giraffes, zebras, impalas, gazelles, lions, Somali ostrich, leopards, elephants and hyenas.

3. Kalama Conservancy

It is one of the 35 member conservancies under the Northern Rangelands Trust. The conservancy is home to elephants, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, cheetahs, leopards, lesser kudu and wild dogs. The conservancy was mainly established to conserve wildlife and improve services for community development.

4. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

The elephant sanctuary is owned by the Namunyak community in Samburu County. It was established to rescue and release orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, and also to create benefits for the host communities. The sanctuary was officially opened on 20th August 2016 by the Samburu County Governor, Moses Lenolkulal.

5. Sera Rhino Sanctuary

It is located within the Sera Community Conservancy in Samburu. It is the first sanctuary in East Africa to pioneer rhino tracking safaris to tourists. The sanctuary also offers amazing walking safaris, birdwatching and cultural experiences in Samburu County.

6. Maralal National Sanctuary

It is one of Kenya’s little-known treasures located in Maralal, Samburu County. It is an ideal destination for wildlife viewing safaris, trekking safaris and camel safaris. The reserve features animals such as impalas, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, buffaloes, eland and warthogs. There is also a lodge and a campsite located within the reserve.

7. Ndoto Mountains

It is situated on the northern end of Samburu County. It features scenic hills, a stunning panorama of jagged peaks and valleys. It is an ideal destination for hiking, camping and nature trails.

8. Loroghi Hills

The hills rise up through a series of escarpments to a peak of approximately 2580 metres. You can explore the spectacular hills covered with bushlands, diverse species of birds and wild animals. It is a perfect destination for trekkers and hikers.

9. Kirisia Forest

It is located in the northern section of Samburu County, within the Leroghi plateau. The forest features diverse species of birds and plants. It is a paradise for bird watching activities and nature trails.
