This is a list of all national referral hospitals in Kenya. A referral hospital is a major hospital that usually has a full complement of medical services such as surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatry, general medicine and gynaecology. Patients in Kenya are often referred to referral hospitals when their conditions are more complex than what lower-level hospitals can handle. There are only 5 national referral hospitals in Kenya.

1. Kenyatta National Hospital
Kenyatta National Hospital popularly known as KNH, is the largest referral hospital in East & Central Africa. It is located along Hospital Road in Upper Hill Nairobi. KNH has a capacity of 1,800 beds, over 6,000 staff members, 50 wards, 22 out-patient clinics, 24 theatres (16 specialized) and an accident & emergency department. It is the teaching hospital of the University of Nairobi Faculty of Health Sciences.
2. Moi Teaching And Referral Hospital
Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital (MTRH) is the second National Referral Hospital in Kenya. The Hospital is located along Nandi Road in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County. The multispecialty hospital has a bed capacity of 1020. It is the teaching hospital for Moi University College of Health Sciences.
3. Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital
Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital is Kenya’s premier psychiatric hospital. It is the national psychiatric teaching and referral hospital. The specialized mental hospital admits patients with severe psychiatric disorders who cannot afford private services and are considered too disturbed to be managed in other public facilities. Mathari has a bed capacity of about 800.
4. Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital
Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) is a Public National Referral Hospital located along the Northern Bypass in Kahawa West, Nairobi. The 650-bed state-of-the-art referral hospital has been operational since October 2019.
KUTRRH Comprehensive Cancer Care is one of the hospital’s flagship projects aimed at filling the gaps in cancer care in the country: early screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Apart from oncology services, the hospital offers the following services: renal, radiology, accident and emergency, rehabilitation, surgery, maternity, mental health, critical care, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and specialized clinics.
5. National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital
The National Referral Spinal Injury Hospital specializes in the treatment of spinal cord injuries. It is located along Lenana Road, off Rose Avenue in the Kilimani area of Nairobi. The hospital has a capacity of 33 beds.
