Kenyan literature is dynamic and has rapidly changed with time. But some literary masterpieces have never lost their taste. They have remained to be some of the best work done by prolific Kenyan writers who ooze with intelligence.
Well, here are some of Kenya’s all-time Finest Literary Authors
1.Ngugi Wa Thiong’o
Ngugi is a living icon of literature. His first novel was Weep Not Child. His most celebrated work remains A Grain of Wheat, which focuses on the Kenyan struggle for independence. His other renown work is The River Between.
2.Margaret Ogola
The River and the Source, one of her best books was published in 1994 and it propelled her to literary fame. The Novel is used for literary studies and it expounds heavily on the rich Luo culture.
3.Grace Ogot
Born in Central Nyanza district in 1930, Ogot published her first short stories in the early 1960s while her first novel, The Promised Land, was published in 1966. She went on to release a myriad of amazing works such as Land Without Thunder, The Other Woman, and The Island of Tears.
4.Francis D. Imbuga
Francis mainly majored in playwright and a majority of his work are often used for literary studies in learning institutions like Betrayal In The City and Aminata. He also published a novel called Miracle of Remera.
5.Marjorie Oludhe Macgoye
She came to Kenya from England as a missionary but later decides to stay forever. Her celebrated work is Coming to Birth. Other works by Macgoye include Murder in Majengo, Street Life, The Present Moment, A Farm Called Kishinev and Song of Nyarloka and Other Poems. Her other works were based on a Luo setting because she was later married to a Luo husband.
6.Binyavanga Wainaina
Although he is facing harsh criticism about his sexuality, Binyavanga is a provocative figure who has developed a reputation satirizing western views of Africa.
Wainaina’s pieces of work are like One Day I Will Write About This Place, How To Write About Africa, among many others.
7.Muthoni Garland
A founding member of StoryMoja, Muthoni is most famous for her works Halfway Between Nairobi and Dundori, Tracking the Scent of My Mother, and her most recent publication is an anthology of short stories called Helicopter Beetles
8.Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor
She is not that much known but her work speaks volumes. Her books are like Weight of Whispers and a novel called Dust.
