Today, (24th April 2018) is World Malaria Day and we thought we could write for you an article that practically relates to this day. Malaria has affected the world and its people for as long as we can remember and it remains entrenched as one of the greatest global health challenge.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there were 221 million reported cases of malaria last year which means that if combined with those unreported, almost half of the entire world population is at risk of getting Malaria.There were more than 450,000 malaria-related deaths worldwide last year too.
Closer home, more than 70% of Kenyans are at a risk of Malaria and the highest number of deaths in Kenya is caused by HIV, TB and Malaria. Kenya and Uganda have some of the highest absolute numbers of probable and confirmed Malaria Cases.
Here are some of the counties in Kenya which are the worst hit by Malaria in 2018 and as you can see, they are majorly arid and semi-arid areas.
