List of Courses Offered At Catherine McAuley Nursing School

This is a list of all courses offered at Catherine McAuley Nursing School. It’s one of the best nursing schools in Kenya run by the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. The school which was established in September 2004, is located at the Mater Hospital along Mukenia Road in Nairobi. 

To date, one thousand, seven hundred and seventy-four (1,774) participants have undertaken various short courses and two thousand and eighty (2080) others taking others longer courses.

Here is a list of all courses offered at Catherine McAuley Nursing School.

1. Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing ( KRN)

This course gives participants a chance to train for two courses;

  • Basic training Kenya Registered Nurses for three years Upgrading
  • Enrolled Nurses train to become Registered Nurses over a period of 18 months.

The syllabus is provided by the Nursing Council of Kenya and students sit their final Council examination which they must pass before they can be registered to practice. The intake for Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing ( KRN) is usually in April.

Minimum requirements

  • KCSE mean grade- C Plain
  • English/Kiswahili- C Plain
  • Biology- C Plain
  • Mathematics or Chemistry or Physics- C minus
    in any one of the three

2. Higher Diploma in Kenya Registered Midwifery( KRM)

Catherine McAuley Nursing School admits Nurses from both public and private institutions to train in midwifery. The training takes twelve months (1 academic year), and the intake is on October each year.

Minimum requirements

  • KRN – Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing
  • BScN – Bachelor Of Science In Nursing

3. Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing(KRPON)

This one year programme has intakes in April each year. Perioperative nursing is a nursing speciality that works with patients who are having operative or other invasive procedures. At Catherine McAuley Nursing School, Perioperative nurses learn on how to work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurse anaesthetists and even surgical technologists.

  • KRN – Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing
  • KRCHN – Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse 
  • BScN – Bachelor Of Science In Nursing

4. Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing( KRCCN)

This is a Higher Diploma programme that equips students with highly specialized training geared towards caring for patients who are critically ill and often require life support. Its intake is in April, and it takes one year to complete.

  • KRN – Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing
  • KRCHN – Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse 
  • BScN – Bachelor Of Science In Nursing

5. Higher Diploma in Kenya Registered Nephrology Nursing( KRNN)

A higher diploma in Nephrology Nursing equips the students with training on treating and caring for patients that are suffering from kidney problems as well as those that are at risk of developing kidney problems. Its intake is in September, and it takes one year to complete.

  • KRN – Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing
  • KRCHN – Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse 
  • BScN – Bachelor Of Science In Nursing

6. Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN)

This programme has the sole purpose of upgrading enrolled Community Health Nurses to Registered Community Health Nurses.

7. Continuous Professional Development Short Courses (CPD)

  • First Aid 2 – Days
  • Basic Life Support [BLS] – 2 Days
  • Neonatal Resuscitation1 day Advanced Cardiac Life Support [ACLS] – 2 Days
  • HIV/AIDS, Prevention, Treatment, Care – 5 Days
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support – 2 Days
  • Ergonomics [Prevention of back injuries] – Half Day
  • Nursing Process2 daysPartograph in Labour Management – 2 Days
  • Family Life Education for TOTs – 1 Month
  • Diabetes Mellitus Management – 5 days
