The institution started primarily to provide technical skills and knowledge to employees of the Ministry of Roads. Its growth has seen it accommodate and admit students from all walks of life including nationals from the sub-Saharan region seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge in the roads and infrastructure space.

The following higher diploma courses are only offered in Nairobi campus and take two years to complete. Intakes are done in May each year and are examined by the Technical University of Mombasa and KNEC.
