This is a list of all estates in Thika. Thika is an industrial town located in Kiambu county. Thika town has an approximated population of 251,057 people. It is the main commercial and industrial town in Kiambu county. Some of the notable industries located in Thika include; Bidco Oil Refineries, Del Monte and Jungle nuts company which is owned by Thika town MP, Patrick Wainaina. The town also boasts of one of the largest private universities in Kenya, Mount Kenya University. It is a cosmopolitan town that is predominantly dominated by the Agikuyu community, which boasts of accomplished businessmen and women.
Here is a list of all the estates located in Thika town in no particular order.
1.Kiganjo estate
It is a middle-class estate located approximately four kilometres from the Central Business District. It is about 10 minutes drive from the CBD. A bedsitter will cost you 5,000 shillings, while a one bedroom house ranges from 10,000- 15,000.
2.Kisii estate
It is one of the safest estates in Thika located approximately 6 kilometres from the Central Business District. Majority of the buildings in Kisii estate are storey buildings which are magnificently designed in the latest architectural designs. The only problem that residents of this estate have been grappling with is the perennial issue of land grabbing by highly connected sources and individuals.
3.Kiandutu estate
This is one of Thika’s largest informal settlements that is dominated by shanties and houses built by muddy soil. Insecurity is a major issue in this slum as it harbours many unemployed youths, low-income earners and drug addicts.
4.Makongeni estate
It is one of the biggest estates in Thika town that is divided into various phases, i.e phase 1,2,3,4 and5. It is located along the Thika-Garissa road. Matatu’s plying this route from the CBD charge 20 shillings. It boasts of one of the biggest malls in the region, that is Ananas mall which harbours various business premises. Houses in this estate are quite affordable for those earning a salary of less than 20,000. The only problem associated with the estate is the rampant cases of insecurity.
5.Section A
The estate is located within the Central Business District. It is largely dominated by the Hindus and Asians who run various businesses in Thika town and its environs.
6.Section 2
It is a posh estate located along the Thika-Murang’a road, near the famous Blue post hotel. It is an affluent neighbourhood with gated compounds and high edge fences. It is one of the most expensive estates in Thika that is mostly associated with the rich.
7.Ngoingwa estate
The estate is located along the Thika-Mang’u road, approximately four kilometres from the CBD. It is a favourable estate for the middle class.
8.Witeithie
It is located along the Thika superhighway, about 10 shillings from Thika town. Its close proximity to the CBD makes it more favourable, however, it has been experiencing insecurity issues over the past years. The estate is partly dominated by the middle class and low-income earners.
9.Landless estate
Landless estate is located in Kamenu ward, along the Thika-Munyu road. Most quarries are located in this estate, in particular, Munyu and Komo villages. Roads in this particular estate are pathetic, more so during the rainy season.
10.Posta
The estate is also located along the Thika-Garissa road. It borders Makongeni estate. Matatu’s plying this route charge 20 shillings from the Central Business District. It is approximately a 7 minutes drive from the CBD.
11.Muthaiga
It is a middle-class estate that borders Kiganjo estate. It is approximately 8 kilometres from the Central Business District. Single rooms range from 2000-4000, bedsitters from 4500 shillings, while one bedroom houses range from 9000 to 14,000 Kenyan shillings.
12.Muguga
Muguga estate is located in Thika East. It is characterized by cheap housing units, mostly single rooms which are affordable to most people who work in the nearby quarries that border the estate.
