First, Consumer goods are products that are purchased for consumption by the average consumer. Alternatively called final goods, consumer goods are the end result of production and manufacturing and are what a consumer will see on the store shelf. Clothing, food, and jewellery are all examples of consumer goods
There are a set of goods which Kenyans consume more, or rather prefer hence they move off the shelf faster than other goods and we have listed them as follows below.
1. Maize Flour
Let’s start it here, Ugali is a staple food in Kenya and a day without Ugali seems weird and incomplete. Many Kenyan families consume ugali daily and especially those families living in urban areas, they have to go to the shelves and buy maize flour. This is one of the fastest moving consumer good in Kenya. Most bought maize flour brands are Soko, Jogoo, Pembe and Jimbi.
2. Milk
Milk follows the same path as maize flour. Many Kenyans consume milk either for tea or fermented milk. Those in upcountry mostly have their own cows but for many Kenyans living in urban areas, milk is a necessary good in shopping baskets hence it becomes one of the fastest moving consumer good. Some highly bought milk brands are Brookside, Molo Milk, Kinangop Dairy, Mount Kenya Whole Milk among others.
3. Bread
Bread and milk are just like a pair. They go hand in hand and that’s why their sales are almost marching. Some of the most bought bread brands though are United bread, Supaloaf and Selecta.
4. Vegetables
Many of the fastest moving consumer goods compliment each other. Vegetables compliment Maize flour and their sales go hand in hand too. Some of the most consumed vegetables though are Kales (Sukumawiki), Spinach, managu just to name a few.
5. Washing detergents and soaps
Washing detergents and soaps have to appear on this list as we generally need to do the cleaning. They are just necessary for our homes. Washing detergents and soaps brands like Omo, Sunlight, Geisha, Dettol, Whitewash and Ariel sell the most.
6. Alcoholic Drinks
Kenya is as per now the top consumer of alcoholic drinks in East and Central Africa and then followed by Ethiopia and Uganda respectively. This means that alcohol moves off the shelves very fast. Some of the most consumed alcoholic drinks brands are Blue Moon, Legend Brandy, Whiskey, Brandy, Vodka, Cognac, Tequila, Vermouth & Shooters to name just a few.
7. Beauty Products
A favourite among women, women consume tonnes of beauty products yearly hence the reason why beauty products sell at a very high rate. Almost all beauty products brands sell fast because users have different preferences which suit them.
8. Fast Foods
Fast foods are a favourite among many Kenyans.
The increase in the number of fast food chains in Nairobi just speaks volumes that the rate of fast foods consumption is very high. These fast foods are like Burgers, Chips, Chicken, Pizzas, hotdogs just to name a few.
9. Sanitary products
Sanitary products are necessary nowadays because of health reasons. Some of the common sanitary products are Tissues, Pads, Pampers, wet wipes, serviettes, toiletries eg bathing soap, shampoo, and toothpaste, toilet tissues,
10. Stationery
Stationery is essential in our normal day to day activities. Writing material is essential whether you are a student or not because businessmen use stationery, parents at home to keep records, employees at work and so on and so forth.
This stationery is like books, pens, full caps, envelopes, pencils, erasers and even sharpeners.
11. Cooking oil and Salt
This is also compliments of Maize flour and vegetables hence one cannot buy one product and avoid the other. The most Preferred salt brand is Kensalt while preferred cooking oil brands are Golden Fry, Avena, Fresh Fri, Elianto, Ufuta, Sungold, Top fry and Rina.
