Let’s face it, despite the fact that Kenya has over 42 tribes,  there are tribes which have outshined the rest in term of wealth.  Below are two lists of richest and poorest tribes in Kenya.

Their main source of wealth is through business.  They are arguably the most hardworking people in the country; they have exploited every opportunity that has come on their way. One secret they have is that they’re not heavy spenders; they also believe that every shilling counts.  This habit has enabled them to have time to reflect on their business and lay future strategies. They are also everywhere in the country. Most of the Kenyan billionaires come from this tribe.

2. Kalenjin

The Kalenjin people are known to have large tracks of land, in fact, they live in the largest province of the country.  Their main source of wealth originates from agriculture. The Kalenjin people are also known to dominate in athletics which has helped them a lot.

3. Kisii

The Kisii are another set of hard-working people, their main source of wealth is through business and agriculture. If you manage to visit Kisii, you will be shocked by the extent to which the land has been subdivided for agricultural purposes. Their land is very fertile.  They also have this habit of being everywhere like their Kikuyu counterparts; talk of exploiting every opportunity that comes on the way!

4. Somali

The Somali community has a history of hardships, which is a driving force behind their success in business. It’s known whenever they settle in an area; they must be noticed because of their aggressiveness. They are not only ambitious but also know how to seek for opportunities.

5. Luo

Arguably one of the most educated tribes in Kenya, the Luo have accumulated the majority of their wealth from white-collar jobs.

6.  Luhya 

Our Western Kenyan brothers’ main source of wealth originates from agriculture. They are very good farmers and businessmen. That’s why you find most of the sugarcane factories are located in their region.  Luhya people are also good at sports.

7. Maasai

The Maasai people need no introduction.  They own large tracks of land and livestock which is their main source of wealth.

8. Kamba

Like many Bantus, the Akamba majorly depends on agriculture and trade for survival. Several notable businessmen and women, politicians, as well as professionals,  originate from this tribe.

9. Asians 

They were recently gazetted as the country’s 44th tribe.  They own the majority of the businesses in the country.
