How to get there
You can drive or fly to and from Saruni Samburu. Driving from Nairobi takes approximately 5-6 hours. There are numerous flights landing at the two nearest airstrips daily on Safarilink, Air Kenya and private charters. Kalama Airstrip is just 30 minutes away from the lodge, and Oryx airstrip is a 1-hour drive away.
Here are things to do while at Saruni Samburu lodge.
1. Day And Night Guided Game Drives
If you want to go deeper into the conservancy, then a game drive will do. Arrange for a game drive during the day or at night and explore the conservancy in detail.
2. Photographic Hide by The Waterhole
There is a ground-level photographic hide next to a waterhole where the famous Samburu elephant, leopard, reticulated
giraffe, Beisa oryx and Grevy’s zebra gather to drink.
3. Guided Bush Walks
You can organize with your guide for a guided bush walk in Saruni Samburu. Guided bush walks are not charged
4. Bush Meals and Sundowners
If you fancy bush meals, then the camp can arrange for bush breakfasts along the dry river bed and even starlit dinner under the vast clear skies or even have dinner while watching the sun sink majestically to the horizon.
5. Birdwatching
You can go for a birdwatching session with a guide who will identify for you many species of birds in the camp.
6. Stargazing
The skies are usually very clear at Saruni Samburu. You can lay down on an outdoor bed and gaze at the stars in the sky and drown in your imaginations.
7. Take a Dip At The Infinity Pools
There are two infinity pools in Saruni Samburu where you can cool off while you enjoy vast beautiful views of the expansive Samburu wilderness.
8. Mount Ololokwe Hiking Excursions (payable extra)
If you love hiking, then Mt Ololokwe is not far off. Through a guide, you can arrange to hike it and pay an extra fee for it.
9. Cultural Visit to Local Village & Community (payable extra)
Go for a cultural visit to a local village and community to learn about their way of living, culture and even past history. You get to learn from the community itself.
10. Visit Saruni Gift Shop For Special Local Artefacts
If you want to go home with souvenirs, then the Saruni gift shop is a must-visit. They have beautiful artefacts though some are overpriced but definitely worth the buy.
11. Visit Local Samburu Caves And See Ancient Rock Art
Go back in time by visiting the Samburu caves and seeing ancient rock art which has been carefully preserved for hundreds of years.
12. Helicopter Excursions (upon request & payable extra)
If you still feel that your pocket is loaded, you can go for helicopter and bi-plane excursions and enjoy the view over the camp and the surrounding areas. This one also needs advance booking and you will have to pay an extra fee for it.
