Corruption has been a major contributor to the increase in the cost of living because these bribes eat directly into somebody’s home budget. It basically means that the higher the corruption, the higher the cost of living. Some of the leading services for which bribe is demanded in Kenya are applications for or making alterations to one’s Identity Card, Application of birth certificate, when seeking medical attention, reporting a crime at police stations, processing a title deed and Passenger service vehicle operations.
The average national bribe stood at Ksh 7,082, up from Ksh 3,257 which was previously being demanded in various institutions across the country in 2005. Currently, Busia tops the list with the highest average bribe size of Ksh 81,560.
