This is a guide on how to deregister a vehicle in Kenya. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is the body in charge of registration and deregistration of motor vehicles in Kenya. The main aim of forming the authority was to harmonize the operations of the key road transport departments and help in effectively managing the road transport sub-sector and minimizing loss of lives through road crashes.
Circumstances for Deregistration of Motor Vehicles
De-registration of motor vehicles is applicable under the following circumstances;
- To motor vehicles being exported out of the country.
- Motor vehicles which have been written off due to accidents.
- Motor vehicles that are unserviceable and the owner no longer need them.
Requirements to deregister a vehicle in Kenya
- ID copy of owner.
- KRA pin copy.
- Tape lift report.
- Duly filled NTSA form C01 (application for motor vehicle de-registration).
- Letter from interpol.
- Request letter for de-registration.
- Original logbook.
- Surrender the number plates.
- Certificate of incorporation.
How to Deregister a Motor Vehicle in Kenya
- Visit www.ntsa.go.ke.
- Select the preferred service portal.
- Click on vehicle deregistration and click on apply deregistration.
- Attach original scanned documents in PDF format.
- Make payments then submit. The charges will be specified by NTSA.
- Await approval and SMS notification.
- Once the process is complete, you will be issued with a deregistration certificate. The deregistration certificate is a confirmation that the vehicle in question has been removed from the NTSA database.
- After receiving the deregistration certificate, remove the number plates from the vehicle and surrender them to NTSA. This is to ensure that the number plates are not used in any other vehicle or in illegal activities.
- Contact your insurance provider and inform them about the deregistration of the motor vehicle for further action e.g. to transfer or cancel the insurance policy.
- Timeline is 10 working days.
